SpringTerm Highlights

The highlight of the Spring term had to be the joint production of Shakespeare’s ‘Merchant of Venice’.  I was extremely proud of the whole class in the way they learnt their lines and performed their section of the play.  Feedback from the children afterwards was also very positive and they all enjoyed and benefitted from the experience.

We also enjoyed finding out about the Ancient Greeks last term. The Ancient Greek Day, which included a theatre workshop involving drama and debate, was followed by an afternoon of making clay pots, cooking Koulourakia cookies, as well as sampling Greek foods.

Well done to everyone who dressed up for the day.

This Term’s Topics…

During the first half of the term, we will be preparing the children for their SATs tests in Maths and English.  These tests will take place in the week beginning 14th May.

The timetable for these tests is as follows:

Monday 14th

Reading Comprehension

Tuesday 15th

Wrting and spelling tests

Wednesday 16th

Maths paper A (non calculator)

Thursday 17th

Maths paper B (calculator)

Mental maths paper

During SATs week the children will be invited to come into school from 8:30am onwards to have a breakfast of toast, (with assorted spreads) and juice before the tests start. Further details nearer the time.

Maths revision classes have already started on Wednesdays after school and will continue until the week before SATs week.

Our Design Technology project for this half of term is making motorised buggies. The children have already started the designing process and can’t wait to begin making the actual buggy.

Our main focus during the second half of the term will be Geography. We will be learning about rivers and how they are formed.  Work in science will link to this topic as we find out about habitats and how plants and animals adapt to the environment in which they live. Our R.E. work will also link to the ’Water’ theme.

During the summer term the P. E. curriculum will include cricket, tag rugby, rounders and athletics.  It is hoped that some of the children will also be able to take part in local tournaments and festivals in these sports.  P.E. kit, including trainers, should be in school all week.

At the beginning of July the children going on the residential visit to Runway’s End, will have the opportunity to try many challenging activities including: abseiling, climbing, canoeing, caveing, mountain biking and archery.

The summer term is also a time for preparing the children for their move to secondary school. There will be opportunities for the children to meet   with teachers from their new school and ask questions. In July they will spend a day at their new secondary school.

On Thursday 28th June, we will be spending the day at Winchester Cathedral.  After a morning workshop, we will attend the Diocesan Leavers’ Service.
