Year 3 - Drake

What a busy term the Spring term was. The children have come back from the Easter holidays full of energy and motivation. This term we are busy preparing ourselves for Year 4 by ensuring that our handwriting is formed correctly and that we are learning to join our handwriting in the most effective ways.  The children enjoyed their Georgraphy learning about Lima, Peru and were able to make comparisons with Yateley, focusing on the different physical features, climate and population.

This Summer term promises to be another exciting and busy term, full of new, exciting learning and challenges. We will be learning about the Romans in History and the different types of land use in Yateley.  We are also very excited that this half term, we will be hosting the Year 3 Sleepover - I know the children are excited to be staying overnight in the school hall!

In  Destination Reader this term we have started a 'proper' chapter book as the children told me. We are currently reading the Firework-Maker's Daughter by Philip Pullman. The book is already sparking their imagination with stories of pirates, a talking elephant and an adventure through the jungle.  As part of our Destination Reader, children take part in whole-class discussions about a text focussing on different comprehension skills. I am encouraging the children to discuss the text with their partner as they are reading and learning more about the stories and the characters.

Please do continue to read with your child at home daily, as this makes such a difference to their reading stamina and fluency in school; it also benefits their learning in all curriculum areas - not to mention earning the coveted so the rocket reader certificates!

In Maths, we will be learning about: fractions with a focus on adding and subtracting fractions, finding unit fractions and non-unit fractions of amounts. We will then be learning about money - converting between pounds and pence, adding and subtracting amounts and solving problems involving money. This is an ideal opportunity for you to support your child with working out the change when buying things in the shops.

As part of our science, we will be learning about light and shadows. The children have already had their first lesson where we learnt that the sun was a natural light source and the moon was a reflector.  The children were extremely engaged when we were talking about the sun and how shadows were formed.

Please read our topic web to find out more about our learning this term!

Thank you for all your continued support with your child's learning, whether it is reading together, practising spellings, times tables or just sharing what they have been learning.
