Forest School and Outdoor Learning
One of the wonderful opportunities our children have is a weekly session in our on-site Forest School. For our Reception children, this is Forest School in its truest sense, while our older children cover elements from across their curriculum, but in our large outdoor setting. Our forest school is run by our qualified forest school teacher who plans for each class alongside the class teacher.
Forest schools are a type of outdoor learning that takes place in a natural environment and learning is centred around children's development and wellbeing. The curriculum is based on a holistic approach to development and is learner-focused.
Our forest school and outdoor learning sessions focus on outdoor, hands-on learning, which can have a huge number of benefits for our children, including:
- Connection to Nature: Spending time in nature helps children develop a stronger connection to the environment, fostering an appreciation for the natural world and sustainability.
- Physical Health: Being outside promotes physical activity which helps children to develop physical stamina, gross and fine motor skills and coordination. Each session includes some ‘freeplay’ time in the natural setting, which encourages them to engage in free play, explore, and take risks, which builds confidence and resilience.
- Cognitive Development - Problem-Solving and Creativity: The outdoor environment offers endless opportunities for creative thinking and problem-solving, from building shelters to navigating the landscape. These activities challenge kids in ways that traditional classrooms might not, stimulating their senses and teaching them problem-solving skills by exploring the natural world.
- Social and Emotional Skills: Being in a natural group setting helps children develop social skills, cooperation, and teamwork, as they often work together to solve challenges or create things. Children can build confidence and resilience through collaboration, communication, and social interaction.
- Environmental Awareness: Children can develop an appreciation for the environment and learn about ecosystems, plant and animal life and sustainability. Every year group will be giving some consideration to the issues our planet is facing and how they can help.
- Self-esteem and Confidence: Children can develop a strong sense of self-esteem, a growth mindset and confidence by overcoming challenges, mastering new skills, and working independently.
- Stress Relief: Nature has a calming effect, and spending time outdoors can reduce stress and anxiety, helping our children feel more relaxed and focused.
- Lifelong Learning: Our children develop a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom. They leave the sessions wanting to find out more!
- Learning Through Play: Forest schools often focus on learning through exploration and play, which allows children to be more engaged. They also get to learn at their own pace, which can build motivation and a love for learning.
- Mental Health and Wellbeing: Our children love it! Forest school and outdoor lessons are linked to improved mental health – our children experience pure joy in the sessions.
Forest schools blend education with adventure, which often leads to more engaged, well-rounded learners. Contact the school to find out more or to see our forest school in action!
